Michael Allen

Queen Worker

Hungry and tired in this place,
the sunlight dies, there is no sanctity here.
The storm came on fast
after the bees took mother
from the inside out.

Dead before her throat got slashed—
she bled honey.

She told us,
You live, die, and
have a little fun in between.

And this makes us smile
as we freeze in the ruins.

Michael Allen is a writing tutor currently working toward a bachelor’s in English at Indiana University Northwest.
