Joseph Salvatore Aversano
THE GREAT DESIGN
whenever drawing an elephant
I start w/ the head
& that’ll think out the rest——
already a tail
    swats at
a fly
PASTORAL SYMPHONY, 1960
(A Tribute to Richard Maxfield)
bits of clipped bug chirp
leaf tipped wing blade of
grass to be fitted back in
in a way we can now call it
a nocturne of the familiar
but w/ moonlit fireflies
when dark
JOHN THE THEOLOGIAN
such is the nature
of this world
that from a beautiful island's
cave mouth cool
an apocalypse
Joseph Salvatore Aversano currently lives with his wife Asu in the Aegean port city of Izmir (Smyrna). A collection of his shorter poems can be found in New Resonance 11: Emerging Voices in English-Language Haiku (Red Moon Press, 2019).
