Howl Backwards, Sort of, with Miscellextraneous Lyrics*

III

Night festers in the cottage door, tearing across
America, highways dripping from sea-walks
you dream on the bus journey to Rockland
the you I’m with, free, forgetful, without underwear
our victory is eternal, mercy shocks the skinned
star-spanked legions, they collapse and run outside
the imaginary walls, where the shadow shows itself
it’s a hospital, the bombs we thought were dropping
are angels, they’ve come roaring out of their comas
wake us up like electric airplanes, my soul won’t
let me sleep unless I’m with you in Rockland, where
night coughs on our bedsheets, the United States
under our bedsheets, hug the United, kiss the States
I’m with you, damned of the Earth, I’ll sing with you
prisoners of starvation, finally all together,
comrades mad with Reason, twenty-five thousand volcanos
in Rockland, tomb of humans, home of Super Jesus
and living eruptions of the past, we’ll resurrect the
Long Island where facist Hebrew doctors accuse socialist
Laotian socialites of revolutionary insanity
of plotting to split the world into nothing and all
the Long Island of enslaved going to Sunday mass
at invisible churches, crosses standing in the void
the Long Island of me on a pilgrimage to your body
in Rockland, to make a clean slate of it, to stand up
to the fifty shocks of your soul returning pingpong
to the madhouse, armed only with finger-banging
piano tunes and puns, where the bodies of nurses
you lie on screaming are not supreme saviors, I’m
not either, I’m just with you in Rockland, waving
across the abyss, to the Bronx, where the actual
game is being played and you are losing, innocent
but losing, expired, catatonic, but immortal, never
dying, you’ll never / die, I’m straight, jacketed
in Rockland, reading the Tribune, the iron’s hot
and I’m trying to strike but I need to pay the rent
on my prison, our common prison, the skull
where our condition is being reported on the radio
has become serious but the thieves and spinsters
will no longer admit they have worms, and breasts
and steal, your spirit right out from under you here
in Rockland, where I’m still with you, still drinking
tea, sharing the same damned dreadful typewriter
laughing at your secretary’s poor jokes, murdering
our invisible mothers over and over in Rockland.

II

street divers carrying flowers wave solicitously
from the roof to the jumpers as they jump laughing
to the river rocks, screaming suicide minds, animal
epiphanies, ten years of despair gone in a flash, a
flood, a crucifixion breaking through the bullshit
flipping the whole sensitive narrative down the river

miraculous hallucinations exist everywhere around us
like smoke on water, ecstatic skeletal sidewalks
monstrous pavements pulling kids on the ground
running a few red lights so we don’t lose the race
we don’t have much time, the city’s getting empty
cold, quiet, and bare, all the casinos burning down

we stumbled through robot suburbs, past demonic
apartment blocks, spectral hospitals, trees, radios
granite courthouses, exploding cock bombs, Moloch
and his infernal treasuries filled with blind capital
that we once broke our backs lifting up to Moloch
to “Heaven,” streaming out of the sky on the radio

we stumbled out onto the lake shoreline, it seemed
the best place around, but there was some crazy creature,
with a gun, shooting flares, setting fires
everywhere, running around making an awful sound
threatening to burn the place down to the ground
it was all over for us, we had to find another place

light abandoned us, frightened me out of my body
I sat lonely, sweating, in a dream, hydrogen-soaked
stared down at from a thousand blind windows in
skyscrapers standing in the long endless streets
of oil and stone, flint and offal, ancient avenues
where poverty is the specter of sexless genius

we walked for indistinguishable days and nights
under a fire in the sky, past countless ruins until
half past dead, we ended up at the Grand Hotel
marble floors and potted dead palms, the rooms
were moldy, anyway we had no reservations so
we made our rest on velvet sofas in the lobby

just a place for nightmares and night sweats really
hideous dreams of factories and crows, banks
and crowns, of Moloch whose machinery is blood
whose tomb is money, whose sobbing jailhouse
is a cannibal army, whose judgement is filth, whose
imagination is screaming under the stairway, whose

music is cement weeping, aluminum bashed open
bones gnawed by wolves, Moloch whose pale flesh
is ripped by weasels, ripped from our shitty sleep
into shitty morning mourning, the loveless thing still
outside,we know we’ll never get out, no matter what
we do, so we make music like croaking in the fog.

I

a thousand years ate up all the good bodies
butchered the poems out of their lives, down
to their hearts, absolved them over the radio
and sent them shivering into the cities crying
eli eli eli, lamentations for love’s naked suffering
burnt lyrics putting down what might be said
but drowned out by America’s band marching
out in the streets outside the Bum & Angel Tavern
where Time blew the shiny golden horn of Jazz
in the bathroom hallway to the beat of the band
outside, after which naked and endless head
Time rose, shaking with the rhythm of shame
while Jazz, reincarnate in his ghostly clothes
stood before Time speechless, rejected, yet
putting down here what might be left to say
in the time come after death and the death
after coming, space juxtaposed, trapped
elemental syntax and human measure
jumping together between images
joining the verb and the noun
together with a sudden flash
vibrating imaginary nothing
rope twisted on a wire
you are not safe
I am not safe
we are not safe
out in the icy streets
consciousness jumping
paper rose hallucinations
therefore ran through gaps
between shuttered shutters
crooked neon storefront scrim
down to the last furnished room
obsessed with the ellipsis catalogue
God Always Knows What Father Does
sense the gaps and dashes of the song
of the dreaming archangel, the notes and
measures of variable alchemies and soups
as in now you’re really in the soup, Carl, or
ah, Carl, where that hopeful little bit of ******
go? ie. all the tiny realms of love, the dreams
of life heavy as the moon in a yellow closet
hanging until mother finally takes it, slammed
and flung at the wall like an empty phone book
out the mental window, the tenement furniture
in the midnight street, solitary bench dolmen
rocking with the echoes of the bickering soul
Pilgrim and Jazz protesting each other’s words
touching fingers, tears, wigs, blood, now each
truly bald, humorless, facing off over the symbolic
pingpong table, giving themselves psychopingpong
therapy instead of instantaneous lobotomies that
demand the concrete speech of suicide to avoid
situations just like this, Pierrot Lunaire poised
on the slick granite steps of the New York City
Madhouse, head shaven, throwing potato salad
pretty accurately at Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young
and subsequently demanding sanity trials, hoping
to wash their hands and get a hung jury, retire to
Mexico to cultivate a habit, hypnotizing young boys
from Harvard, moving them in their black locomotive
from Rockland to Tangiers or the South Pacific or
Alcatraz, charming them with sweet blues crashing
through their criminal brains, waiting until the soul
crashed, on its knees, hopeless, salivating, waiting
in vain for the ones who, insane, went to Denver
to be on talk radio and died in Denver, on their
knees in church, then drove cross-country 72 hours
barring down hotrod highways listening to each other’s
jail cell confessions and 1930s blue records
Jazz, in this incarnation, leaned out the window
driving through nostalgic Birmingham, holding up
just one finger, rolling down Golgotha Street into
Chinatown and the groaning of barefoot Germans
throwing up broken glass into colossal toilets
in alleyways and subway entrances, nude Greeks
blowing steam whistles into the ghostly daze
of night, bloody screeching drowning out the blare
of firetrucks responding to those who sing out
their windows in despair, fall out, leap out, cry out
Italians, mostly, forgotten by their families, crazed
enough to jump into the lousy Passaic, throw their
soup off the Brooklyn Bridge, cast their ballot for
those pretend-innocent flannel suits running for
offices on Madison Avenue, alarm clocks on their
heads, regiments buried alive under advertising
under sinister editors who cut their wrists inside
their penthouses every day from now to Eternity
unsuccessfully as it turns out, watching it all
from the roof or from taxicabs running down
drunks, the fairies’ shrieking, fashion spreading
like mustard gas, burning the old, unsuccessful
and deluded like bad verse in antique stores
it’s a bad poetry that’s outside time, even Time
understands what Jazz means when he says
who ate the bad crab stew to barf out this shit?
who squats at the muddy bottom of the Bowery
sour mouths full of rank onions and bad music?
who weeps at the rivers of romance in the streets?
who sits breathing darkness and coughing flame?
who scribbles stanzas of gibberish theology?
Moloch in Rockland, that’s who!, shouts Jazz
answering himself while Time nods and shakes
his head, resigned to the fact that this moment
this conversation, will be from this moment on
an unshakeable memory, painful, sordid, painful
and permanent, no matter how many stolen cars,
how many rickety nights, how much cocaine
in musty basements, how many hometown girls
in empty diners, how many stumbling hungover
Third Avenue mornings, how many oblivious
crowns slipping down off hoop-shaped heads
while floodlights hang under wartime shapes
above the Hudson, where all the suicidal dramas
flash their buttocks as the icy sunrise cracks
their cracks, sweetens the naked snatches
trembling red-eyed in the cold, fainting under
gyzym-visions and falling off park benches
into dormitories for heterosexual intellectuals
poor ones, that is, the ones with only one
of everything, one dollar, one cigarette, one
cunt, one bed, one one-eyed sweetheart
a blond naked angel sobbing in the bathroom
wounded, pierced, endlessly hiccuping, howling
on her knees, waving away your genitals and
studying the manuscript she dragged off the roof
just after she bit the detective in the neck and
just before he jumped off the roof shrieking
dropping onto/into his police car like an anchor
into coral, splintered, intoxicated, drowned
in its steel caresses, fucked in the ass by it
practically, blood and broken glass scattering
like semen onto the gathered crowd: sailors
motorcyclists, gym rats, squares with beards
FBI agents weeping and undressing, trembling
before the lava and ash of poetry wailing down
like sirens on 1st Street, burning cigarette holes
in their arms and disappearing into a narcotic
tobacco haze on Houston, Maybe they went
looking for Moloch himself in the dark lounges
where the hungry and lonely Spaniards talked
about the old days in America and Africa and
Chicago, and about Eternity, and Capitalism
and the volcanoes of Mexico, talking brilliant
music out of their mouths, until breaking down
crying over their hopeless task, passing out
eventually, into their cold soup, knocking it
off the bar onto their dungarees, dark-skinned
shadows of their incomprehensible selves
crying inside the white machinery, Time says
as he and Jazz walk all night in submarine light
wandering around at midnight toward boxcars
in the snow lonesome railroad yard, lighting
cigarette after cigarette, broken hearted and
no where to go, except into withdrawal, into
rackety boxcars, into bleak furnished rooms
over junkyards, waiting for the grindings
and sufferings of Chinese migraines, going
on without even wondering, finally jumping
impulsively into the Chinaman’s limousine
when he pulls up next to them on Baltimore
Street and asks would they like to go with him
to Oklahoma to meet some mad visionaries
some Idaho Indians who vibrated their feet
and studied telepathy and the Kabbalah, and
sang Fugazi songs, so of course Time and Jazz yes
on impulse under a winter midnight streetlight…

…24 hours later sitting in a foul-smelling limo
under small-town rain in Pawhuska, Oklahoma
smack downtown outside Bickford’s Tavern
and Social Club, desolate jukebox moaning
floating out the cracked leather swinging door
we who have talked continuously for 24 hours
from Brooklyn to this crack of doom are now
facing stale beers, priming ourselves up to
sit through the whole stale beer afternoon
writing ambiguous picture postcards to girls
who forgot us as soon as they left high school
and listening to the sound of hydrogen escaping
what we can’t, that trail of memories, anecdotes
and shocks vanishing into nowhere, leaving
but not going anywhere, not leaving us and not
letting us leave, try as we might, lost battalion
jumping off windowsills, clambering down
fire escapes, screaming and vomiting facts
that no one can corroborate any more, leaving
a trail of meat on the pavement, of jails and
wars and ballgames, from Atlantic City Hall
all the way to the Moon, our intellects gorged
with total recall, while dreary zoo light’s weak
brilliance drained our brains of all bleak battered
wrack-mouthed shuddering children’s dreams,
brought them down under the noisy wheels
with drugs, holy Bronx benzedrine nightmares,
endless rides on subways chained to cock
and alcohol, minds light of kindness, ranting
into ashcans in the dusk, winter’s roaring
vibrations shuddering trees, traffic lights
the sun and moon, endless balls blinking
overhead as we teaheads joyride through
blind streets, through boroughs of storefronts
and rooftops and universities and obscene
illuminated solidities, backyard cemeteries
and wine-tastings, Time’s mind leaping from
pole to pole like lightning in the clouds of
Canada and Greenland and all the wild
incomparable motionless wine-drunk worlds
between, all the pompous Blake-like odes
written by underwear-wearing undergraduates
cowering in unshaven rooms in academy halls
and dining rooms and all the Peyote-Green trees
dawning between Little Rock and Laredo, Time
hallucinating his own death night after night
torso purgatories in turpentine fires in paint-fume
flophouses in Paradise Alley, in the heart of the
New York marijuana district, belting out hoary
show tunes through his beard, hand on his pubis
busting through the wall in terror, listening
through thin walls to neighbors burning money
in steel wastebaskets, cowering on soot-stained
windowsills, publishing crazy screeds and
getting expelled from War College, scholarly
tragedies green-lighted by cold-eyed skulls
radiating supernatural darkness and passing
through walls, Jazz left that train of thought
right there, right on that tenement roof, turns
his narrow head, staggers back from the bright
glow illuminating what look like angels, angels
over the El, baring their brains, tops floating
across Jazz contemplating cities rising up high
floating flat across cold water, smoking, eyes
hollow, the bright shine shatters Jazz’s poverty
night with its machinery of dynamic dynamo
stars connected to heavenly ancient burning
hipsters, headed by angry angels looking for a
fight at dawn in the streets dragging themselves
naked hysterical starving, mad enough to destroy
generations, my best mind, me.
