Richard Kostelanetz
from NEWFIE
Richard Kostelanetz writes: "Nearly all Americans and many Canadians don’t know that prior to joining the Confederation in 1949 Newfoundland was a colony not of Canada (or the USA) but the British crown. If not for the popularity of a huge dog named after the island, United Statesians might not have heard about Newfoundland at all.
"Consider NEWFIE to be one American writer’s contribution to canonical Canadian literature, perhaps because no native-born Canadian could have written it. The intermediary was my closest colleague in creative writing, John Robert Colombo, a Canadian national treasure, who discovered a list that he knew would engage me. Thanks again, John."
