Matthew Medina
TIE DIE
Epicurus said, “You have the common law right
to let peach juice          drip
                                                            drip
                                                                                drip           down your chin
                                                                                to the
                                                                                                     floor below.”
You also have the right to skateboard
on a corrugated rooftop above
a concrete parking lot.
You have the right to gun-forward
like a geyser who overslept,
and now has something to prove.
You have the right to lose a fly ball in the sun, Saturday,
and to cover your purple bruise with Ben&Jerrys, Sunday.
You have the right to be thick
like petrified sap clinging to a rock
that was once a tree.
And, Yes,
You have the right to remain as silent as
a silk tie tied to a stop sign by a District Attorney
who up and quit
to write poetry,
feral, and now flopping in the wind.
Matthew Medina is the author of Real World Search & Seizure: A Street Handbook for Law Enforcement (Looseleaf Law Press, 2006). He's also published poetry.
