Ernesto Priego

Mythologies of Divine Love

Armand, he wrote,
lives in the essence
of eternal love,
but Marguerite
lives in the awareness
of her alienation.

These are two types of love:
like the Nautilus &
the drunken boat,
all myth is sentimental,
the pitiful agony
of the drying of the flesh

& if I ask anything that is less
& if in the natural yearning of the soul

i think it is a great pity
to die while still young,

please consider the edges
of the windows, keenly fingered,

or the athletic signs
because speed here
is expressed in jazz clubs,
a mascot, after all,
is indispensable
in all expeditions.

These are two types of love:
a little trip on a boat,
on an azure sea,
in an essentially sunny country.
The rest is tragic madness.

Ernesto Priego was born in Mexico City. He lives in London.
