Sixteen Gouaches (cont'd)
Creation of the Worlds

Anasazi Squares

Bauhaus Rectangles

Dreamed Language (detail)

Toni Simon writes:
My focus on geometric design was predated by a dream in which an unfamiliar language appeared, carved in stone like cuneiform but composed of various geometric shapes.

In this series I've revisited past historical eras to extract geometric forms: borders and incised gold from Egyptian mummy cases, illuminated manuscripts and "The Creation of the World" by Siennese painter Giovanni di Paolo. I was inspired further by the subtlety and balance of Anasazi ruins, Oceanic shields, Anni Albers' textiles and Machine Age design.

The works shown in this issue were painted (with one exception) in the past year with gouache on paper or clayboard panel and range in size from 4½" x 6½" to 11" x 14".

She lives in New York with poet Nick Piombino.
