Mary Cresswell

Mesostic for Matsubara

It will be authentic,   not M irrors and smoke, you promise
enlightenment, the odd SatorI to keep us on track. Later is
time enough to plan  a MemoiR of how you waxed and glowed
like a new moon, a celestial OysteR hanging over the mangroves
in a star-slubbed grey KimonO in a night too big for both
of us, drinking the ElixiR of too much youth and too many words
                                   S moke and mirrors

PROMISE

When I die, I’ll come back as a shark
safe and separate, deep in currents
of my choosing — not so deep
that I miss the sunlight
breaking on the reef,
not so shallow
that I miss
tasting
you
