INFORMATION

Bicycle up the hill to find Italy. There is a dimension to even the smallest oceans. Sometimes color can be added before language is created. Sometimes the woman will wave as she passes by.

INFORMATION

The square only the consolidation of distance. The circle only the accumulation of speed.

INFORMATION

Her legs flapped in the breeze. Some of her faces were extra. The ocean, and not the forest, was repeated once she left. She had a word that had not been given to her before.

INFORMATION

A cow filled with chocolates. A machine filled with chickens. A barn filled with clouds. Three men the assumption they need to make the map work.

INFORMATION

The house never looked real, even though they were able to enter it like a real house.

INFORMATION

Hesitates to give the new ones roads to follow, animals to stalk, words to learn, the idea of a kiss, a picture of the sky.

INFORMATION

Laughs instead of counting, instead of asking for the punishment he truly deserves. Laughs at the color they have used to represent him in the formula, and the word they think will capture his subtleties. Laughs, and then retreats into the emptiness the laughter leaves behind.

INFORMATION

They looked for the stolen vegetables, for the bicycle made out of wood, for the woman who specialized in discipline. They looked for the map that showed the wrong streets, and for the lizard that escaped from the train. Each time they entered the market, the market grew larger. Each time they spoke a word, it could not be spoken again. They could not enter into the river more than once.

INFORMATION

There are different ways of telling time: snow, the picket fence, the little red wagon, the woman who never wore a hat.

INFORMATION

The special effects can make you seem larger or smaller, older or younger, or more attractive than you have ever been. They can give you an arm that is mechanical, or a mind full of tentacles, or a room full of children that have been assembled from plastic. They can turn you into a bear that they all recognize at once, just before they gather around the table for supper.

INFORMATION

The stunt double leaps through the window and runs across the courtyard. This is an ad for motor oil or a certain brand of herbal cigarette. This is the way the woman tries to create a market for her services, tries to make us believe that color is a kind of solution, tries to help us figure out which word must be completed.

Bob Heman lives on an island that doesn’t seem like an island. His poem “Perfect” is included in A Cast-Iron Aeroplane That Can Actually Fly: Commentaries from 80 Contemporary American Poets on Their Prose Poetry (MadHat Press, 2019).
