Andrew Topel
from covert
Andrew Topel writes: "this series (covert) was made by starting with seven different languages printed out onto seven sheets of paper. white-out was then used to cover some of the text on each sheet. these seven sheets of paper were then torn and collaged onto a single sheet of new paper. finally, this sheet of paper was fed through a brother electronic typewriter. i typed out poetry in english which overlapped the collage of the other seven languages. After scanning this collaged & typed over page, i broke the page up into 2 inch x 2 inch squares, resulting in the finished images.
"i think of covert as a way to represent communication visually. sometimes we catch snippets of dialogue, in a familiar language or unfamiliar. even when paying close attention we are not always able to catch all words. misunderstanding & confusion may occur as well"
