Cecelia Chapman

IN A WORD 2021

All pieces 9 x 12 in., 23 x 30 cm. Watercolor, collage, Arches paper.

Cecelia Chapman is a California-born artist living, temporarily, in Massachusetts. She makes short videos and essay-based works on paper that experiment with text, image and consciousness. A number of her short California neo-noir stories have also appeared in Otoliths over the years.

She writes about the above pieces: "IN A WORD uses words as labels, words that have recently entered our vocabulary. Some are misspelled, distressed and destroyed, to irritate the viewer, to cause them to stop and think about the words they see. Often these words are used without thinking about their enormous power, consequences, use in media propaganda, or their subtle affect on our own consciousness."
