Charles Clifford Brooks III

Kingston State of Mind

I put on blue sunglasses.

Start up the car, spark acrid smoke,

windows to the ground.

Beethoven rides shotgun.

Pretty girls in cotton dresses

stand outside a coffee shop.

Traffic is slow. Cops are busy

somewhere else.

I need to get laid.

Daydreams & Dime Bags

Herman Melville is speaking to
the royalty of New England.
I am in the crowd,
head taller than everyone else,
looking at his blizzard of a beard.
I can't hear what he's saying.

It’s a dangerous place to be
trapped
pacing
scrabbling to be better.
Doing good
because being good’s
too hard.

Sunflowers slip open
and into something more corruptible.
With them
alyssum and wandering dew
sprawl over their boundaries.
Out there, against the glass,
blue birds crash into their reflection.
