Giovanni Fontana










Giovanni Fontana is a performer, visual and sound poet, videographer, architect – a multidisciplinary artist, in other words. He is the creator of numerous traditional and multimedia publications. Among his works are the radio piece Le droghe di Gardone (Fondation Vuitton 2016), the video poem Poema Bonotto (Fondation Bonotto 2015) and the LP Epigenetic poetry (Los Angeles, 2016). A theorist of “epigenetic poetry”, he is one of the most prominent representatives of international sound poetry. His recent performances include La voix libérée (Paris 2019), Le poème en actes (Paris 2019), and Sento - dunque suono (Marseille 2020). An author of sound novels and plays, he has written for numerous musicians, including Ennio Morricone and Roman Vlad. Active in the realm of visual poetry since the 1960s, he has participated in approximately 800 exhibitions, including the Rome Quadriennale and the Venice Biennale.

In 2020 he was awarded the Alberto Dubito International Lifetime Achievement Award, reserved for personalities from the artistic world who have distinguished themselves for their attention to the correlation between text and musical languages. In 2022 the volume Giovanni Fontana: A classic of the avant-garde (Agenzia X) was dedicated to him, edited by Patrizio Peterlini and Lello Voce, containing numerous critical essays on his work.
